Simpson Died Without Paying Most Of $33.5 Million Judgment

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - The families of the late football star O.J. Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman will finally collect on the $33.5 million judgment that was awarded to them in 1997 after a wrongful death civil trial.

Simpson, who was acquitted of murder charges in 1995 in the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Goldman, died Sunday at age 74. He had paid only a small fraction of the judgment, and the families had been trying to collect for years.

The families' attorney, David Cook, said in a statement that he had been in talks with Simpson's estate and that a settlement had been reached. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

"This is a victory for the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman," Cook said. "They have waited a long time for justice, and now they finally have it."

Simpson was found liable for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Goldman in a civil trial in 1997. The jury awarded the families $33.5 million, but Simpson never paid the full amount.

In 2007, Simpson was sentenced to 33 years in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping. He was released from prison in 2017 after serving nine years.

Nicole Brown Simpson and Goldman were killed on June 12, 1994, outside Nicole Brown Simpson's home in Los Angeles. Simpson was the prime suspect in the murders, but he was acquitted of all charges in a criminal trial that ended in 1995.

The deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Goldman remain one of the most infamous crimes in American history. The case was the subject of a number of books, movies, and television shows.
