Justin Fields Traded to Pittsburgh Steelers

Former Bears Quarterback Becomes Backup in Pittsburgh

March 16, 2024 at 07:45 PM

In a surprising move, the Chicago Bears have traded quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The deal was announced on Saturday, March 16, 2024, and confirmed by both teams in statements.

Fields, a former first-round pick by the Bears in 2021, will join the Steelers as a backup to veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky. The Bears received a 2025 sixth-round pick in exchange for Fields.

Fields struggled in his time with the Bears, starting 20 games and posting a record of 6-14. He threw for 2,382 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. His 85.4 passer rating ranked near the bottom of the NFL.

In Pittsburgh, Fields is expected to provide depth behind Trubisky, who signed a two-year contract extension with the Steelers in the offseason. The Steelers also have Mason Rudolph on their roster as a third quarterback.

The trade marks a significant shift for both the Bears and the Steelers. For the Bears, it signals a move towards rebuilding and a search for a new franchise quarterback. For the Steelers, it provides insurance at the quarterback position and a potential future starter if Trubisky struggles or gets injured.
